Holland was born in 1825 in Bridport, Addsion, Vermont, USA. Holland's father was Dan "Old Black Dan" Austin and his mother is Clarrissa UNKNOWN. His paternal grandparents were Nathaniel Austin and Anna Merritt. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Horace R., Jehial, William, Cordelia, Susan, Amanda, Huldah and Roxana.
