Stephen was born on February 15th, 1763 in ,Chatham,Nc. Stephen's father was Stephen Hobson and his mother was Ann Barnes. His paternal grandparents were Cpt George Hobson and Hannah Kinnison; his maternal grandparents were Brinsley Barnes and Elizabeth Lindley. He had four brothers and a sister, named George, David, Silas, John and Ann. He was the oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother named Joseph.
