Philip was born about 1123 in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England.  Philip's father was Robert de Caen the Consul Fitzroy Earl of Gloucester and his mother was Maud Amabel Sibyl Fitz Hammon Countess of Gloucester.  His paternal grandfather was "Beauclerc", King Of England Henry I; his maternal grandparents were Robert FitzHamon Earl of Gloucester and Sybil de Montgomery. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William Mafonache, Hamon, Richard Fitz Robert de, Roger, Mabira de, Maud Fitzrobert De and Mabel.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children. He had two half-brothers named Richard and Robert.  He died after 1147.
