Maud Fitzrobert De was born about 1120 in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England.1 Maud Fitzrobert De's father was Robert De Caen Earl De Gloucester and her mother was Maud Fitz Hamon. Her paternal grandparents were "Beauclerc", King Of England Henry I and Sybilla Corbet Lady of Alcester; her maternal grandfather was Robert Lord De Orelly Fitz Hamon and her maternal grandmother is Sybil Montgomery. She had six brothers and three sisters, named Roger, Richard, Hamon, William Of Gloucester, Philip Fitzrobert De, Robert, Mabel, Mabira de and Juliana. She was the fifth youngest of the ten children. She died on July 29th, 1189 in Chester, Cheshire, England. She was buried on July 29th, 1189.1 General Notes

Earl Ranulf of Chester had married the daughter of Robert earl of Gloucester at some time in the reign of Henry I, and she was with him in the castle, being besieged by King Stephen's men. Although completely surrounded, Ranulf managed to escape from a secret postern, slipped past the guards, and rode right across England to Gloucester to appeal to his father-in-law for help. Earl Robert was not the man to leave his daughter in distress without coming to her aid. Summoning the knights who had accompanied him to England, and calling together all disaffected barons whose lands had been taken by the king, or who had otherwise suffered under Stephen's rule, he led his army in a north-easterly direction towards Lincoln. Meanwhile Earl Ranulf had collected reinforcements from his Chester territories and the two armies met somewhere along the road. On 2 Feb 1141 they halted on the banks of the River Trent: rain had been falling in torrents and the ford was in flood. Undaunted by the swirling waters, Earl Robert declared 'he would die or be captured if he did not win the victory. Then, as all filled him with good hope, he resolved to risk battle at once, and, strange to hear, swam across the racing current of the river mentioned above with all his men.' This account is by William of Malmesbury, but a more detailed description of the battle comes from Henry of Huntingdon who was archeacon of Lincoln at the time. [Lincoln Castle, p. 19-20]
