Robert II was born about 1058 in Marche, Poitou, France.1 Robert II's father was Roger De Montgomery Earl of Shrewsburg and his mother was Mabel Talvas Countess of Shrewbury. His paternal grandparents were Roger De Montgomery Vicomte d'Hiemois and Josceline De Ponteaudeme; his maternal grandparents were William II Talvas Prince of Belleme and Hildeburge de Beaumont. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Phillip, Arnulf, Maud, Mabel and Sibyl. He was the third oldest of the six children.
