Jonathan J. (Jack) was born about 1837 in Morgan Co., Alabama.1 Jonathan J. (Jack)'s father was James Hogan Basham and his mother was Lucillian 'Lucsey' Unknown. His paternal grandparents were Jonathan Basham and Elizabeth Hogan. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Jacob W., George Jasper, Claborn C. J., Aron King, David M., James William Ellen, Beulah Elizabeth, Mary J., Francis Emily, Martha A. and Lucy Palistine. He was the oldest of the twelve children. He had a half-brother named James Alexander. He died on March 20th, 1865 in Morgan Co., Alabama.1 General Notes

Jonathan J. (Jack) Basham was shot and killed by a band of vigilantes co
ns isting of "Bill Penn of the mountains", Bill Looney, Perry Cummings, S
am B lackburn and Sam Swann. The story goes that one of the five avenge
rs wo re a battered uniform and a hat with a hole in it, while Jack Bash
am wo re a new hat. In his anger the soldier swapped hats with Basham say
in g, "That hat is good enough for you to go to Hell in!" Each of t
he fi ve men carried a gun. The soldier unloaded two of the guns, mixed th
em a ll together, so no man knew who held the loaded guns. Young Basham w
as pl aced at a distance, and at a given signal all men pulled the trigger
s, a nd no one knew which of the five men killed Jack.
