IN MEMORY OF GEORGE JASPER BASHAM The death of GEORGE J. BASHAM which oc
cu rred Wednesday night, July 31, has cast a gloom over the entire Bethl
eh em Community, where he had lived for so many years. Mr. Basham had be
en sl ightly indisposed for several days before he was taken ill, but thou
ght no thing of it. On Friday before his death he was taken sick with stom
ach tro uble and soon his bowels became paralyzed and nothing that medic
al skill c ould do would relieve him. Mr. Basham was born in Morgan Count
y, Alabam a, 14 September 1850 and would therefore have been 62 years of a
ge next mo nth. The deceased parents died when he was only a small boy a
nd when he w as in his teens he came to Texas to make his home with his un
cle, PRESL EY WEBB SR., who at that time lived near Peoria. Here he contin
ued to ma ke his home until he was married to Miss Vanwinkle, a sist
er of Tom and Je sse Vanwinkle about forty years ago. To this union was bo
rn two childre n; James D. who became a lawyer and lived at Hillsboro unt
il his death so me four years ago, and the other child Mrs. Annie Dyer, wh
ose residen ce is in Dallas. Mr. Basham's second marriage was to Miss Bel
le Wats on of the Bethlehem Community in 1881 and to this union was born t
welve ch ildren, nine of whom survive. They are Misses Rosa and Pearl w
ho live at t he old homestead; Mrs. Lottie Henderson of Childress Count
y; Mrs. Della Co ok of near Huron, and the following children who still li
ve at home; Mitti e, George, Hazel, Ruby, and Finis. The deceased has be
en a member of the C umberland Presbyterian Church for about 40 years a
nd had by his honest, up right life convinced everyone who knew him th
at he was a true Christia n. He lived his religion every day and had the f
riendship of everyone w ho chanced to know him. Mr. Basham had lived on t
he same farm where he di ed for about forty years, and had accumulated con
siderable property, n ot by unfair methods but by honest hard work. Howeve
r, the best legacy th at he has left to his children is the life he has li
ved. His noble deed s, his life of sobriety and honesty will be worth mo
re to his lived ones t han gold or silver. This good man was taken befo
re he had lived the usu al three score and ten, but the all-wise Creator k
new best and has call ed him to his reward. The funeral services were cond
ucted Thursday afterno on by Rev. B. F. Moon after which the remains we
re followed to Bethlehem C emetery where they were interred until resurrec
tion morn. To the bereav ed loved ones the Messenger extends deepest sympa
