His paternal grandparents were James William Allen and Penelope Johnston; his maternal grandparents are J. E. Weaver and Nancy Unknown. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Peter Benjamin, Howard Johnson, Daisie, Lottie, Winnie, Ada and Etta. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
