Martin and his father moved from Campbell County , KY. around 1808 to Lo
ui sana.
He was married to Elizabeth Vice and had three children, Miles N. , An
na C atherine, and Mary G. Upon reaching a settlement in Louisana, whi
ch was l ater renamed Allen's settlement. He and Elizabeth had James Bu
d, Elizabe th ,Martin Jackson , Nancy, Saraha, and Benjamin John, and Caro
lina Eli za Matild In 1809 , Martin and his father and the
ir famili es led a colony of settlers from Kentucky to the coast of ''Lou
isiana, t hen called Attakapas Parish, Now St. Marys. The Allens moved f
urther inla nd to Natchitoches Parish and founded what was then know a Al
len's Settle ment. Later the name was shortened to Allen. La. It is loc
ated not f ar from the town of Natchitoches. When the "republican Ar
my of the Nort h" was defeated at Medina River in Texas. Martin Allen ret
urned to Allen 's Settlement in Louisana to care for his family and step-m
other , Sara h. There are various documents in Natchitoches Parish concer
ning Sarah af ter her husband's death. In February of 1822, she boug
ht a slave and chi ld from James W. Allen; October of 1822 she record
ed a will in which the t wo slaves were to be freed upon her death. Th
en in February of 1823 Sar ah mortgaged the two slaves for a debt of $10
0. Mary Ann Allen the wid ow of Hiram, Married Dury Thompson in St. Pari
sh in 1814. In 1820 , Mose A ustin obtained permission from the Spanish go
vernment, to establish a colo ny of settlers from the United States on Spa
nish soil in the Provence of T ejas. Returning to Missouri, Mose Austin b
ecame ill and died. His deathb ed wish was that his son , Stephen F. Aust
in, carry through with his pla ns for a colony. In August of 1821 ,Steph
en Austin returned to San Anton io to finalize the agreement with Govern
or Martinez to bring 300 famili es to Tajas. These 300 Families, kn
ow as "The OLD THREE HUNDRED" are cons idered the founders of Texas. The n
ext year in 1822, Martin Allen began pr eparation to fulfill his dre
am of moving to Texas. Martin began the mo ve on his own before applyi
ng to Austin. Throughout the "Austin Papers" a re letters from Martin All
en to Austin. These letters have provided a wea lth of information on Aus
tin's Colony and the Allen family's move to Texa s. We know it took thr
ee years for martin to finalize the move. In 18 22 he was 42 years o
ld , and Mary was 38 and the mother of eight childre n. Their ages rang
ed from 16 to a baby of less than a year old. In the 18 26 Census of Tex
as we can only account for seven children, Three boys a nd four girl
