Paul E. BURLING
A long journey back from Dallas, Texas, in an effort to regain health in his old home community, ended fatally, last night at 11:40, when Paul E. BURLING, 43, died in Mercy hospital where he had been a patient for just a week.
Mr. BURLING who had been a resident of Dallas, Texas, for the past fourteen years, took sick October 30. He was a patient in St. Paul's Sanitarium, Dallas, for some time, and a week ago, accompanied by his brothers, Henry and Albert BURLING, of this city, who went down to Texas to bring him home, the sick man arrived in Portsmouth, and entered Mercy hospital.
All that science and the tender ministrations of relatives and friends could do to stay the hand of death proved vain.
Mr. BURLING was born in Ironton, June 24, 1883, the son of William and Elizabeth BURLING. During his early boyhood, the family moved to Portsmouth, and he was reared in this community. Attending schools here, he finished his education, and took employment in Portsmouth stores, being employed for a time by R. P. SELLER, and later by the Samuel Horchow Company.
In 1914, Mr. BURLING went to Dallas, Texas, where he soon won his way to prominence. He was manager, at the time he was striken, of the Bush & Gerls Piano Company, store in DAllas, the largest of its kind in the state of Texas.
Surviving are Mr. BURLING's mother, Mrs. Elizabeth BURLING, 1214 Franklin avenue; one sister, Miss Margaret BURLING, 1214 Franklin avenue; and six brothers William, 618 Eighth street; Frank of Cincinnati; Charles of Alpine, Texas; Henry, of the N. & W. division offices here; Bernard, of Sixth street; and Albert, N. & W. operator at Rarden.
Mr. BURLING had held memberships in the Elks and the Knights of Columbus, having received the fourth degree in the latter lodge.
Funeral services will be conducted fromt he St. Mary's Catholic church, of which Mr. BURLING was a member, Monday morning at 8:30. Interment in Greenlawn.
