Joan of Montferrat was born about 1104.  Joan of Montferrat's father was Marq. Regnier III of Montferrat and her mother was Cts. Gisele of Bourgogne.  Her paternal grandparents were Marq. Guillaume II of Montferrat and Otta of Aglie; her maternal grandparents were Ct. Guillaume II of Bourgogne (The Great) and Ettienette or Stephanie of Longwy. She had a brother named Guillaume IV of Montferrat.  She was the older of the two children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Amadeus III of Savoy and Adelaideof Savoy.  She died in 1127.

‌Joan of Montferrat and Guillaume III Clito of Flandres were married in a religious ceremony in 1127.  They had a daughter named Maud of Normandy.
