Joan was born about 1202 in Of,Pembroke,Pembrokeshire,Wales.1   Joan's father was William Marshall and her mother was Isabel Fitzgilbert De Clare.  Her paternal grandparents were John Fitz Gilbert Marshal and Sibilla d'Evereux; her maternal grandparents were Richard Strongbow Fitzgilbert de Clare and Eva (Aoife) McMurrough. She had five brothers and seven sisters, named Richard , Earl of Pembroke, Gilbert , Earl of Pembroke, William II, Anselm , Earl of Pembroke, Walter, Isabel , Countess of Hertford, Margaret, Sibyl, Maud (Matilda), Eve, Isabella and Sibyl.  She was the third youngest of the thirteen children.  She died in 1247.1
