Johannes Petrus was born on April 9th, 1784 in Stellenbosch. Johannes Petrus' father was Simon Petrus van Blerk and his mother was Johanna Margaretha Bergh (van Blerk). His paternal grandparents were Nicolaas van Blerk and Catharina Maria Magetski; his maternal grandparents were Olof Abraham Bergh and Johanna Margaretha Groenewald (Bergh). He had a brother and two sisters, named Nicolaas, Johanna Margaretha and Christina Marthina. He was the second youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and four half-sisters, named Jacobus Rogier, Christina Catharina, Anna Hendrika, Catharina Margaretha and Johanna Petronella.General Notes
