William was born on July 13th, 1794 in Dallas, Morayshire.  William's father was Thomas Riach and his mother was Anna Cruickshank.  His maternal grandparents were John Cruickshank and Margaret Buie. He had four brothers and a sister, named Alexander, John, James, Peter and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 70 in 1864 in Hill of Edinvale, Dallas, Morayshire.
