James was born on September 7th, 1787 in Dallas, Morayshire.  James' father was Thomas Riach and his mother was Anna Cruickshank.  His maternal grandparents were John Cruickshank and Margaret Buie. He had four brothers and a sister, named Alexander, John, Peter, William and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
