Alexander was born on April 28th, 1781 in Dallas, Morayshire.  Alexander's father was Thomas Riach and his mother was Anna Cruickshank.  His maternal grandparents were John Cruickshank and Margaret Buie. He had four brothers and a sister, named John, James, Peter, William and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 87 in 1868 in Slacks of Coldhome, Dallas, Moray.
