Peter was born on July 29th, 1792 in Dallas, Morayshire.  Peter's father was Thomas Riach and his mother was Anna Cruickshank.  His maternal grandparents were John Cruickshank and Margaret Buie. He had four brothers and a sister, named Alexander, John, James, William and Margaret.  He was the fifth oldest of the six children.
