John was born on July 12th, 1789 and his baptism took place on July 14th, 1789 in Killowan, Scotland.  John's father was Andrew Breckenridge and his mother was Elizabeth Ferguson.  His paternal grandparents were Andrew Breckenridge and Isobella Jamison; his maternal grandparents were David Ferguson and Janet Watson. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named David, Thomas, Andrew, Isobell, Janet, Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Jean, Janet and Elizabeth.  He was the eighth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 58 in 1847 in Gumeracha, South Australia.1
