Joshua was born in 1829 in Breightmet.1  Joshua's father was Jonathan Twist and his mother was Ann (Nancy) Lomax.  His maternal grandparents were Joshua Lomax and Anne (Nancy) Wood. He had a brother and five sisters, named Peter, Susannah, Mary, Nancy, Sarah and Deborah. He had an adopted brother named Adam.
