Walter was born in 1908 in Birkenhead.¹

Birth Notes

Walter's father was Douglas Mercer and his mother was Frances Violet Smith. His paternal grandparents were John Robert Mercer and Emily Anne Herring. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Douglas, George, Albert, Stanley, Violet, Gladys and Edith. He was the third oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 60 in 1968.
