William's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Alice Calderbank.  His paternal grandparents were Edward (Nedde) Mather and Mary Hough. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Edward, Thomas, Mary, Alice, Ellen and Catherine.  He was the youngest of the eight children. He had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named George, James, Isaac, Nathan, Thomas, Esther, Peggy, Lucy and Ellen.  He died at the age of 60 in December 1882 in Chorley.³
