George was born in January 1827 in Adlington and his baptism took place on March 25th, 1827 at St. Katherine (B'rod).1  George's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Amy (Amey or Emy) Worsley.  His paternal grandparents were Edward (Nedde) Mather and Mary Hough. He had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Isaac, Nathan, Thomas, Esther, Peggy, Lucy and Ellen.  He was the third oldest of the nine children. He had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named John, Edward, Thomas, William, Mary, Alice, Ellen and Catherine.  He died before 1896.
