Mary was born in December 1839 in Mellor.1  Mary's father was William Mather and her mother was Margaret Pomfret. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Nicholas, Amos, Zephaniah, Nancy and Margaret.  She was the second oldest of the six children.  She died at the age of 49 in 1888.
