Amos was born in December 1842 in Mellor.1  Amos' father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Pomfret. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Nicholas, Zephaniah, Mary, Nancy and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 50 in 1892.
