Ellen was born in June 1843 in Bolton.1  Ellen's father was James Crompton and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. She had three brothers and four sisters, named James, William, Richard, Alice, Jane, Elizabeth and Mary.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
