Alice was born in March 1840 in Bolton and her baptism took place on April 11th, 1841.1  Alice's father was James Crompton and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. She had three brothers and four sisters, named James, William, Richard, Ellen, Jane, Elizabeth and Mary.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.
