Elizabeth was born in September 1851 in Bolton.1  Elizabeth's father was James Crompton and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Coup. She had three brothers and four sisters, named James, William, Richard, Alice, Ellen, Jane and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the eight children.
