Willem's father was Gerrit Jacobsz de Vries and his mother was IJda/Yda/Ida van der Schalie.  His maternal grandparents were Cornelis Corneliszn van der Schalie/Schally and Aeltje of Alida Cornelis van der Borcht of Burg of Borg. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Jacob, Cornelis, Teunis, Gerrit, Gijsbert, Teuntje and Alida.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.
