William was born in 1803 in Legbourne, Lincolnshire, England and his baptism took place there on May 1st, 1803.  William's father was Mr James Kirk and his mother was Mrs Mary Parker?. He had six brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Robert, James, Charles, Nathanael, Elizabeth, Mary and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.
