Robert was born in 1806 in Legbourne, Lincolnshire, England and his baptism took place there on September 28th, 1806.  Robert's father was Mr James Kirk and his mother was Mrs Mary Parker?. He had six brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Thomas, James, Charles, Nathanael, Elizabeth, Mary and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
