Thomas was born in 1804 in Legbourne, Lincolnshire, England and his baptism took place there on October 7th, 1804.  Thomas' father was Mr James Kirk and his mother was Mrs Mary Parker?. He had six brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Robert, James, Charles, Nathanael, Elizabeth, Mary and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
