Lavinia was born in 1867 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.  Lavinia's father was Mr Frederick Hughes and her mother was Mrs Lavinia (Lizzie) Newman.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr John Hughes and Mrs Elizabeth Hulme. She had a brother and two sisters, named George, Emma and Emily.  She was the oldest of the four children. She had a half-brother and six half-sisters, named Frank, Elizabeth, Betsy, Annie, Mary, Lavinia and Annie.  She died  due to Congestion of the Brain (Scarletina) at the age of 4 on July 25th, 1871 in Burslem, Staffordshire, England.1
