Betsy was born in 1880 in Kilnhurst, Yorkshire, England.  Betsy's father was Mr Frederick Hughes and her mother was Mrs Rosetta Wright.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr John Hughes and Mrs Elizabeth Hulme. She had two sisters named Elizabeth and Annie.  She was the second oldest of the three children. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named George, Lavinia, Emma and Emily.
