George was born on November 16th, 1872 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.1  George's father was Mr Frederick Hughes and his mother was Mrs Lavinia (Lizzie) Newman.  His paternal grandparents were Mr John Hughes and Mrs Elizabeth Hulme. He had three sisters named Lavinia, Emma and Emily.  He was the youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and six half-sisters, named Frank, Elizabeth, Betsy, Annie, Mary, Lavinia and Annie.  He died  due to P.O.W. Camp at the age of 73 in 1945 in Changi, Singapore.
