Emily was born in 1871 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.  Emily's father was Mr Frederick Hughes and her mother was Mrs Lavinia (Lizzie) Newman.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr John Hughes and Mrs Elizabeth Hulme. She had a brother and two sisters, named George, Lavinia and Emma.  She was the second youngest of the four children. She had a half-brother and six half-sisters, named Frank, Elizabeth, Betsy, Annie, Mary, Lavinia and Annie.  She died at the age of 1 in 1872 in Burslem, Staffordshire, England.
