William was born in 1725 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on July 11th, 1725.  William's father was Mr James Gibson and his mother was Mrs Jean Cuming.  His maternal grandparents were Mr Alexander Cuming and Mrs NK NK. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Alexander, James, George, Margaret, Isobel, Elizabeth and Isobel.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
