James was born in 1717 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on April 21st, 1717.  James' father was Mr James Gibson and his mother was Mrs Jean Cuming.  His maternal grandparents were Mr Alexander Cuming and Mrs NK NK. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Alexander, William, George, Margaret, Isobel, Elizabeth and Isobel.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 74 in 1791 in Seafield, Scotland.
