William was born on March 31st, 1821 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on April 19th, 1821.  William's father was Mr John Gibson and his mother was Mrs Jean Knox.  His paternal grandparents were Mr George Gibson and Mrs Christian Arthur. He had three brothers and three sisters, named George, Robert, John, Margaret, Jean and Clementina.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
