Robert was born in 1808 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on September 28th, 1808.  Robert's father was Mr John Gibson and his mother was Mrs Jean Knox.  His paternal grandparents were Mr George Gibson and Mrs Christian Arthur. He had three brothers and three sisters, named George, John, William, Margaret, Jean and Clementina.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
