John was born on January 7th, 1817 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on January 25th, 1817.  John's father was Mr John Gibson and his mother was Mrs Jean Knox.  His paternal grandparents were Mr George Gibson and Mrs Christian Arthur. He had three brothers and three sisters, named George, Robert, William, Margaret, Jean and Clementina.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
