George was born in 1807 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on January 16th, 1807.  George's father was Mr John Gibson and his mother was Mrs Jean Knox.  His paternal grandparents were Mr George Gibson and Mrs Christian Arthur. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Robert, John, William, Margaret, Jean and Clementina.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
