Jean was born in 1810 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and her baptism took place there on June 8th, 1810.  Jean's father was Mr John Gibson and her mother was Mrs Jean Knox.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr George Gibson and Mrs Christian Arthur. She had four brothers and two sisters, named George, Robert, John, William, Margaret and Clementina.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
