Frederick was born in 1870.  Frederick's father was Louis_IV of_Hesse and his mother was Alice Maud Mary.  His paternal grandparents were Charles of_Hesse and Elizabeth of_Prussia; his maternal grandparents were Albert Augustus Charles and Victoria Hanover.  He was the fifth of seven children.  He had a brother and five sisters, named Ernest Louis of_Hesse, Victoria Alberta of_Hesse, Elizabeth "Ella", Irene of_Hesse, Alexandra Fedorovna "Alix" and Mary "May".  He died at the age of 3 in 1873.
