Mary was born in 1878.  Mary's father was Joseph Matthew Brown and her mother was Lavinia Whittaker.  Her paternal grandparents were John Brown and Elizabeth. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Joseph, Elizabeth and Ann.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
