Joseph was born in 1875.  Joseph's father was Joseph Matthew Brown and his mother was Lavinia Whittaker.  His paternal grandparents were John Brown and Elizabeth. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Elizabeth, Mary and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
