John was born in 1869.  John's father was Joseph Matthew Brown and his mother was Lavinia Whittaker.  His paternal grandparents were John Brown and Elizabeth. He had a brother and three sisters, named Joseph, Elizabeth, Mary and Ann.  He was the oldest of the five children.
