Johann Philipp was born on October 12th, 1752 in Enkirch and his baptism took place there on October 15th, 1752.  Johann Philipp's father was Johann "Peter" Lauff and his mother was Maria Elisabetha Creutzer.  His paternal grandparents were Johann Georg Lauff and Agnes Catharina Fuchs. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Johann Christian, Johann Daniel, Carl Friedrich Daniel, Georg Burckhard, Frantz Daniel, Dorothea Elisabetha, Anna Elisabeth and Maria Elisabetha.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
