Frederick Hendra was born 26 dec 1877 at St Cleer, Cornwall, the son of John Hendra and Mary Jane (nee Rowe). Little is known about his childhood years. He joined the army (details of his service are not available at the Public Record Office, so his enlistment date is not known). It is known that he was a sapper in the 43rd company R.E Corps, regimental number 1338. It is said that he was in South Africa, but since his service records are not available, it is not known whether he fought in the Boer war. It is known, however, that he was at the Military Station in Mauritius 1904/1905 and, so the story goes, was due to come home. (Uncertain whether that would have been on leave or at the end of his service?) But he became ill with an inflamation of the liver and died at the Station Hospital at Curipipe, Mauritius 3 Jan 1905. The family were sent a photograph of his headstone which reads...
"In Memory of Frederick Hendra, sapper R.E. aged 27 years. Erected by his comrades of the 43rd Company. Royal  Engineers. Thy will be done." He never married.
