21. Mary3 Balfe (John2, Edward1) was born Abt. 1836 in Parkmore
Townland, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, and died 15 March 1886 in Oro Twp, Simcoe
Cty, Ontario. She married (1) John Hayes. He was born 15 August 1835. She
married (2) James Hayes 29 April 1858 in Barrie Ontario, son of John Hayes
and Mary Walsh. He was born Abt. 1829 in Kilrossantly, Co Waterford,
Ireland, and died 07 July 1904 in 11 Peel St., Barrie Ontario.

11 in 1847.
The History of Oro Twp. Book, Kith'N Kin (page 143), states, "James and his
wife Mary, came from Ireland, to Oro to a pioneer farm (W1/2 13-3)(- West half
of Lot 12, Concession13), They were Roman Catholic.. The census states that
all the children were born in Upper Canada (UC). Michael took over his father's
farm. One son entered the priesthood. Jack and Pat Hayes were farming the
original farm until recently, when it was sold. "
1851 census lists her as born in Ireland, age 17, single, living in Leeds Cty,
Ontario, with her parents.
1861 census lists her as Mary Ball-Hayes, born in Ireland, married in 1857, age
22, married (to James Hayes) and living with her husband and son in Oro Twp.
Simcoe Cty, Ontario.
1871 Census lists Mary Hayes, age 33, born in Ireland, R. Catholic, Irish,
married and living with her husband James and family. She cannot read or write.
St Mary's Parish RC Church in Barrie states that Bridget Alice Balf was born in
Oro August 27, 1877 and baptized September 27. Her parents were Thomas
Balf , born in Ireland, and Margaret Ann Murphy, born in Canada. The
sponsors were William Shanacy and Mrs James Hayes (Balf).

and living with her husband James and family in Oro Twp.

A tender parent, companion dear" Also on the same stone is the death of John
Hayes June 20, 1892 aged 33 years and 3 months.
St Mary's parish death register lists Mrs Jas Hayes Oro (entry #3). Mary wife of
James Hayes of Oro died March 15/86 and was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery
March 17 aged 48 yrs. RA O'Connor.
Ontario Government Death registration (#016502) states Mary Hayes died 18th
March 1886, age 48, a Farmer's wife, born in Ireland, Cause of death, Ill for
about 8 mos. In the space for Name of Physician if any, there is the name James
Balff Oro. Is this her brother? The death was registered on 26th March 1886,
and her religion is RC.

Ontario in 1846.

1861 census lists James Hayes, Farmer, Born in Ireland, married in 1857, RC,
age 27, married to Mary Ball-Hayes, and living in a Log house in Oro Twp.,
Simcoe Cty., with his wife and son John.
1871 Census (Film C-9964, page 43, Division 1, line 10) lists James Hayes, age
40, born in Ireland, R. Catholic, Irish, Farmer, married and living with his wife
Mary and family in Oro Twp, Simcoe Cty. He can not read or write. He owns a
100 Acre farm, 1 house on the farm, 1 barn, 1 wagon, 1 plough/cultivator,
Concession 3 Lot 13, 50 acres improved, 6 acres of wheat produces 50 bushels,
1 acre potatoes producing 150 bushels, 100 acres turnips, 15 acres of Hay
producing 13 bales, 2 oxen, 3 milch cows, 10 horned cattle, 5 sheep, 5 swine, 2
swine killed, 50 lbs butter, 10 lbs wool, cut 75 pine logs.
1881 Census (Film 13251 page 59, Divion 1, line 7) lists James Hayes, age 49,
born in Ireland, Catholic, Irish, a Farmer, married and living with his wife Mary
and family in Oro Twp, Simcoe Cty. Ontario. The census was enumerated on
April 23rd, 1881.
1901 census (Film T-6496, Oro Twp Simcoe Cty Ontario, s-District j2, page 3)
lists James Hayes head of household, widowed, born 15 August 1835 in Ireland,
age 65, immigrated to Canada in 1825 (? - he was born in 1835), RC, Farmer
and living with his family in Oro Twp. There was an Albert Staley, single born
1884 in Ontario Rural, age 16, Irish, Methodist relationship to head of
household is listed as Don, living with them.
The Ontario Government Death registration lists James Hayes died July 7, 1904,
age 74, residence 11 Peel St., a Retired farmer, married (interesting that he is not
listed as a Widower), born in Waterford (Cty) Ireland, Cause of death, Paralysis,
1 week, attending Physician H. Williams MD, religion RC, Name of person
making return E.J. Byrne, and registered July 9, 1904.
The Simcoe Cty Probate of Wills states that a James Hayes of Barrie, a yeoman,
died July 7, 1904. His will was probated after that date. This may be the same
person.
St Mary's RC parish Barrie ON death register lists James Hayes aged 82 died in
Barrie July 11th 1904 buried in St Mary's Cemetery. JJ Egan. This may be the
same James Hayes.

marrying Mary Bulph in 1858. She lists her father as John and states she is from
Oro.

married Mary Bulph, residence: Oro near Barrie, born in Co. Wicklow Ireland,
parents John Balph and Alice Dobs. Witnesses: John McKin(?), Ann Shaun...
(?), and Margaret Shaun... - all of Barrie. Marriage 29 April, 1858. F Jarrott
priest.
