He died in 1928, from cancer, and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Toronto.
Father Hayes was just under six feet tall and powerfully built. For years he had two nicknames, Guy' and
"Daddy". In the classroom he was an outstanding teacher. The centennial booklet of St. Basil's Parish in
Toronto listed him as a pastor in "The Golden Age" of the parish and went on to say, "He is remembered
as a devoted, energetic pastor and a fine preacher. He guided the parish through the years of the First
War and was beloved for his kindness and friendliness to all." He was a fine preacher with a "great
voice." In Waco he preached missions as a way of making St. Basil's College known and of financing it.
At Assumption College he founded the St. Dionysius Literary Society in 1896 to encourage public
speaking among high school students. For some years he served as provincial treasurer. Father Hayes
was always popular with the diocesan clergy.

"I used to exchange letters with Pat. He lived in McBride BC. He had a pole farm in the mountains and
according to a neighbour had a wonderful set of horses. I think I was in high school at the time and it
was so unusual to correspond with someone such as he - he once sent us the skin of a bear that had been
pestering him. Don't know when he dropped out of school - surley customary in those days - and his
letters reflected the lack of education but he sounded pretty much like a John Wayne type. Rugged
individualist!" Further notes from John Hayes adds, "He'd (Patrick) cut trees down and use his horses to
drag them to such point as they'd be accessible for marketing."
